Intro to Sociolinguistic part 2

This writing deals with intro to sociolinguistic as the second part of the writing that has been posted earlier.

Intro to Sociolinguistic

Holmes (1992) states that sociolinguistics is the study of the relationship between language and society. It explains why one speaks differently in different social contexts. it concerns with identifying the social functions of language and the ways it is used to convey social meaning. 

The following conversations show how messages are expressed differently to different people.

conversation 1

Ray : Hi, mum.

Mum : Hi. You’re late.

Ray : Yeah, that bastard Sootbucket kept us again.

Mum : Nana’s here.

Ray : Oh sorry. Where is she?

conversation 2

Ray : Good morning, sir.

Principal : What are you doing here at this time?

Ray : Mr. Sutton kept us in, sir.

Thus, I would like to provide some related information to Sociolinguistic diversity, as follows:

• The principles underlying the investigation of patterns and conventions of language behavior known as sociolinguistic rules or rules of speaking . These rules are not universal across cultural group

• Norms and values that inform speakers’ knowledge as to what is appropriate to say to whom and in what conditions vary from community to community around the world even within language group.
• People from different sociocultural backgrounds bring with them their own values and norms, and sometimes they judge other speakers based on their norms and values.
• When the spekers use their norms and values or do not follow the rules of speaking of the target language it may lead to misunderstanding or miscommunication.
• Sociolionguistic differences may lead to miscommunication or misunderstanding , and the type and sources of the sociolinguistic differences are pragmalinguistic failure and sociopragmatic failure.

Basically, there are still a lot of information that I need to firstly paraphrase so that I can finally post it. Well, Im going to continue this writing for the third part. Hope this one is useful and helpful before going to further discussion about Sociolinguistic. Cheers....
